What is the meaning of Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras, also called Carnival, is a festive season that occurs before the start of Lent. The main events typically occur in February or early March, and sometimes last up to a week. Mardi Gras is French for ‘Fat Tuesday‘ referring to the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.

In the United States, Mardi Gras celebrations are most prevalent in New Orleans, Louisiana, where the holiday has been celebrated since French settlers arrived in the early 1700s. Mardi Gras is also celebrated in Mobile, Alabama; Galveston, Texas; and Pensacola, Florida. Mississippi Gulf Coast towns such as Biloxi, Gulfport, and D’Iberville also host smaller celebrations.
